Terms of use
Information, not advice
plumb gathers public information about data centers in Virginia. It is not legal, financial, real-estate or engineering advice. Check anything important with the original source or a professional.
No guarantee
We work to keep the data right, but it can be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and estimates are estimates. plumb is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind.
Use it fairly
Don't sign petitions under someone else's name, flood the site with automated requests, or try to break or overload it.
Other websites
We link to government, news and research sites. We don't control them and aren't responsible for what they say or do.
We may change these terms or the site. The date at the top shows the latest version.
Privacy
Searching an address
What you type is sent through our server to Photon (OpenStreetMap data) and the US Census Geocoder to find the location. We don't keep a record of your searches.
The address appears in the report's web address, so it stays in your browser history and in any link you share.
The research brief
To write the brief on a report, the address and its location are sent to Anthropic's Claude, which may run a web search. The finished brief is saved and reused for anyone who looks up the same area (about 1 km), with nothing that identifies you. Your IP address is used for a short time to limit requests and is not saved.
Signing a petition
We store your first and last name, whether you live in Virginia, the petitions you chose, your impact answers, your optional comment, your county, your ZIP code if you give it, the signature you draw (a small image), and the time. Your drawn signature is saved with your signature record and is never shown publicly. We also keep a one-way, scrambled version of your IP address to stop duplicate and fake signatures; it can't be turned back into the address. Your street address is never stored.
The site only shows totals. As the form says, we may share your name and county with the officials named in the petition. Signatures are stored with Supabase.
Maps and hosting
Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap and the site runs on Netlify. Like any website, they see your IP address when your browser asks them for something.

Disclaimers
Independent
plumb is not affiliated with any government agency, utility, or data center company.
Estimates are estimates
Virginia keeps each site's power and water use secret, so those figures are our calculations, tagged Calculated. See how they're made.
AI-written briefs
The research brief on each report is written by AI from our data and a web search. It can make mistakes, so follow its cited links before relying on it.
Petitions
plumb's petitions are not official government petitions, and signing one doesn't guarantee that any official will act.
